Champagne Connection - Champagne Indent Newsletter 2020

Champagne Indent Newsletter 2020.
Sadly 2020 has been a year to forget thanks to drought, bushfires and now the Corona virus. Fortunately there are some events that are still worth looking forward to and in this case I am thinking of a bottle of champagne (or maybe 2). And so I am very pleased to be able to offer you a large selection of champagnes with this year’s Indent Offer.

In addition to the wonderful range of wines from Blin, Goutorbe and Loriot-Pagel, I am offering a small selection of champagnes from our friends at Charles Heidsieck. Unfortuantely, there isn’t an active importer for Deutz champagne in Australia at the moment so Deutz is not on the list this year. Hopefully this will be rectified in the future.

Sadly this year’s Tour de Champagne was been postponed until 2021 and so I am offering a
‘Friends 6 Pack’ of champagne instead of the usual Tour Dozen. Included in the 6 pack are the following: one bottle each of Veuve Clicquot NV, Charles Heidsieck NV, Vilmart NV, Taittinger NV and Ruinart Blanc de Blancs NV. This gives you a wonderful chance to take a tour of champagne comparing the champagnes of the big houses with the small family producers that we enjoy so much.

Last year there was a slight mix up with my order at Loriot-Pagel and I was sent Cuvée de Reserve
2010 instead of the Brut Nature which is their excellent and very fine Non Dosage champagne. This situation has been rectified and you can be confident of receiving the correct wine this year.

News From Champagne.
Most of the news coming out of Champagne, like here, is about Covid – 19 and certainly France has endured a much more catastrophic scenario than we have experienced here, even worse than Victoria.
Fortunately none of the people I know have contracted the virus and they are starting to get back to business which is timely as their wineries were shut for the best part of 7 weeks. The next major problem the grape growers will face is finding pickers when the vintage starts in September as many of the pickers are itinerant and movement around Europe will most likely be restricted.

On the bright side though is the release of the 2014 vintage champagnes by Loriot-Pagel. 2014 has been compared very favourably with the 2012 and 2008 vintages, high praise indeed.
Talking of the 2012 vintage, I recently received a text from a very happy client, telling me that they were enjoying a bottle of Loriot’s 2012 Blanc de Blancs and that it reminded them of the Taittinger Comte de Champagne Blanc de Blancs. Naturally I had to open a bottle of the Loriot 2012 the next day and try for myself. Whilst much younger than the current release Comte, it is certainly a stunning champagne.

I am also, very much looking forward to trying the new 2010 vintage from Goutorbes as well as the new 100% Apogee from Jerome Blin. Jerome’s wines continue to shine and he is receiving ever increasing recognition in new export markets such as the US and Japan. They are of course just catching up to Australia.
